Mandala of Light
December 20th, 2014
As I write this , it is almost 24 hours before the winter Solstice at 5:03 pm, December 21st in St. Louis. When the Solstice takes place the axis of the earth is tilted with the north pole furthest from the sun. Daylight is shortest for the year on this day. The journey to more light begins after this moment.
I am thinking about light. I am also enjoying the mandala of light made from fused glass I created last year. This circle of spiraling colors lets light shine through. It helps me center myself in its mandala shape. It also brings light into focus.
The broken glass pieces fused together in the kiln. Earlier this year, I spent time at my friend Deb’s glass studio. She’s a glass artist who does amazing things with glass. She showed me how to create a circle of light in an easy to do way.
It begins with choosing a shape, a circle of course.
Pieces of already cracked clear glass are placed into the circle shape.
Glasses and gloves required.
Once all the clear glass pieces have filled in the circle shape, colors are added with powdered pigments.
A small screened holder lets the pigments fall in their swirl pattern.
All the powder colors are added. Ready for the kiln.
Once the kiln fires, the glass is fused. After it is cooled, it’s ready to be placed so the light can shine through.
Today the light shines into and through my mandala of light. A reminder of the light that always shines inside our souls, and shines brightly even in the darkest day of the year.
HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE – LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE BRIGHTLY
